A project aimed at tackling one of Lithuania's most pressing health challenges: transforming the nation from having one of the EU's lowest physical activity rates to becoming its fittest country.
The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics showing that 53% of Lithuanians never exercise or play sports, according to the Special Eurobarometer 525 report on "Sport and Physical Activity" (2022). This positions Lithuania significantly behind fitness leaders like Finland, where only 8% of the population reports physical inactivity.
This declining physical activity trend has far-reaching implications beyond individual health. According to our research, reduced fitness levels among Lithuania's youth directly impact national defense readiness, with a significant number of military conscripts struggling to meet basic physical requirements. Additionally, the healthcare system bears an increasing financial burden from lifestyle-related conditions that could be prevented through regular physical activity.

The challenge is particularly pronounced among specific demographic groups. Studies show that with each developmental stage, individuals become progressively less active, with teenage girls showing the steepest decline in physical activity. Modern educational environments contribute to this trend, with children spending approximately two-thirds of their school time in sedentary positions.
The problem isn't just about individual choice. It's about creating an environment where active living becomes the natural default. We need to transform our urban spaces, workplace cultures, and social norms to support movement throughout the day.

To bridge the 45% activity gap with Finland, the initiative requires engaging approximately 1.3 million currently inactive Lithuanians in regular physical activity. This ambitious goal demands a complete reimagining of how physical activity integrates into daily life, from early childhood through senior years.

Stay tuned.
